Survival Island
The notes and activities in the “Survival Islands” Kit takes the issue of disasters to the classroom so students can relate to natural hazards in the Pacific and learn how to tackle them. “Survival Islands” takes the six major types of natural hazards that occur in the Pacific: cyclones, river floods, tsunami, landslides, volcanoes and earthquakes provides a checklist for minimising their adverse effects.
Each disaster brochure comes with information about the particular natural hazard in a snapshot style “Did You Know Facts” list. Some experiments and a board game for each natural hazard are also part of the kit. The experiments and board game are an interactive and fun way of helping students learn more about disasters and how to prepare for them. Tokens are included in the package for the board game and it can be played by any number of players. Players take turns rolling a dice and moving around the board game from “START” until “FINISH”. Some rules apply as the “Snakes and Ladders” board game.
The kit is intended for upper primary classes 4 – 6.
